Have The Simpsons ‘predicted’ this year’s World Cup final?.

Football fans have looked to an old Simpsons episode for an early prediction of which two sides will contest this year’s World Cup Final.

The ongoing tournament in Russia looks to be wide open at present, with some of the early favourites to win the trophy – including Brazil, Spain and France – having produced a set of unconvincing performances in their respective group games.

The current trajectory of the tournament has led some fans to consult an old episode of The Simpsons from November 1997 for some guidance on who might reach the final.

The season nine episode, The Cartridge Family, saw Mexico and Portugal contest a match which would “determine once and for all which nation is the greatest on Earth”.

The moment has been pulled up by fans following The Simpsons‘ recent strong track record with predicting real-life events, including Disney’s takeover of 20th Century Fox and the election of Donald Trump as US President.
