There was an absolute mess on Highway 400, south of Mapleview Drive in Barrie this morning. A multi vehicle pile-up involved around 70 vehicles.
The highway reopened shortly after 5:00 this afternoon.
The city of Barrie was asked to send in transit buses to shelter those involved in the crash Monday morning. One of the vehicles involved was a tanker truck that spilled 500-litres of fuel – which Barrie fire says is now under control.
The cause of the collision has not been released but driving conditions were extremely unsafe, with numerous roads, schools and businesses all closed due to whiteouts and slippery roads. Snow plows didn’t even make it out in some parts of Simcoe County Monday due to the weather, which carried high winds and blowing snow. The latest from police has Highway 400 shut down in both directions between Mapleview Drive and Innisfil Beach Road.
