Women in federally regulated workplaces may have access to free menstrual products soon.

The government proposed to put feminine hygiene products, such as tampons, in the same group of toiletry supplies as toilet paper and soap which employers must provide free of charge.

They aren’t sure exactly how the program will work.

The proposal, made public Friday, launches a 60-day consultation to find out which products are needed and how to account the cost businesses may face.

There’s questions on how to provide the products in trains and aircrafts with space limitations or if washrooms are shared between employees and the public.

The proposed rules would apply to 1.2-million workers in the federal labour force.
