The furlough scheme needs to be wound down, Rishi Sunak has said.
He told the press breifing: “As we reopen the economy, there is broad consensus across the political and economic spectrum, the furlough scheme cannot continue indefinitely.”
Employers will be asked to contribute, alongside the taxpayer, to pay the wages of their staff.
In June and July, the scheme will continue as before, with no employer contribution at all, he confirmed.
In August, the taxpayer contribution will stay at 80 per cent. Employers will only be asked to pay national insurance and employer pension contributions, he says.
By September, employers will be asked to start paying towards people’s wages. Taxpayers will pay 70 per cent of the furlough grant, employers 10 per cent.
In October, taxpayers will pay 60 per cent, employers 20 per cent.
The scheme will then close.
