More than 40,000 residences and businesses are without power in the Detroit area, and thousands more are are dealing with power outages in Northern Michigan.

At about 1:30 p.m. July 19, DTE was reporting 40,352 customers without power in and around Detroit, with the majority of those just north of Waterford.

Smaller-scale outages are affecting about 1,700 customers each in both Howell and Hazel Park, the company reports.

After storms ravaged Northern Michigan on Saturday night and Sunday morning, many remain without power near Petoskey, Charlevoix and Grayling.

As of 1:35 p.m., Great Lakes Energy was reporting 6,741 outages with 2,365 of those in Charlevoix County, 1,933 in Emmett County and 1,148 in Antrim County.

At the same time, Consumers Energy was reporting outages affecting 36,250 customers statewide, including an additional 1,500 in Emmett County. Petoskey is the county seat of Emmett County.

The majority of outages reported by Consumers Energy are in the Grayling/Roscommon area as well as on the northeast side of the state between Midland and Alpena.
