Late winter storm brings several inches of snow.

A late winter storm brought snow to portions of southern New England on Friday, and residents braced for frigid cold and the possibility of more snow behind it.

While far from a blockbuster storm, by late in the day it had delivered as much as 8 inches of snow to Cape Cod, where several traffic accidents were blamed on slippery roads.

In Rhode Island, schools in several communities around the state were closed and parking bans were in place. Some communities got several inches of snow by the afternoon, including Richmond, with 6 inches, and Little Compton, which received 5 inches, according to reports made to the National Weather Service.

While the roads were slippery in spots, few serious accidents were reported in the state.

In Providence, mild temperatures meant the snow melted as soon as it hit the pavement, so there was little accumulation that required plows or shovels.

Forecasters said Arctic air, cold enough perhaps to set records for this time of year, would move into the region over the weekend, accompanied by strong wind gusts that could make it feel like it was below zero in parts of the region.

The National Weather Service said another storm was likely to bring snow to New England on Tuesday.
