Black ice Monday to make treacherous commute after snow bomb leaves freezing temperatures.

Roads remain treacherous this morning due to compacted snow and ice, with up to 50 schools closed across the midlands.

The worst affected counties appear to be Roscommon, Sligo, Donegal, Cavan and the eastern half of Galway, with many routes made hazardous by snow, ice or slush.

In addition side roads in Westmeath, Meath and parts of Offaly, Kildare and Wicklow are said to have widespread areas of compacted ice or ice and snow making driving conditions extremely dangerous. The Garda has advised motorists to avoid the Sally Gap in Wicklow.

Bus Éireann said there were minor disruptions with no services in some towns such as Oldcastle, Co Meath and Mullinavat , Thomastown and Gowan Co Kilkenny.

Traffic on all the main routes into Dublin is very heavy and a broken down bus in the right hand in Pearse Street is expected to cause delays.

Road users and pedestrians have been warned to take extreme care on roads and slippery paths, particularly in parts of the midlands and west where ground snow has froze.
