Snow and ice warnings pummel the country and bring freezing -5C temperatures.

ICE storms are set to sweep Britain today as the country is plunged into another big freeze so cold it could disrupt mobile phone signal.

Phone reception could fall victim to the -5C cold snap as snow and ice also wreaks havoc on the roads and railways for the start of half-term.

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings as snow showers batter the country and keep things chilly.

The warning, in place for much of the UK for today, warns: “Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

This is due to icy winds drying moisture in the air onto power cables.

The cables can then break in the chilly weather and cause outages and loss of signal.

Parents hoping to make the most of the half term break will be left disappointed as heavy rain and snow gear up to batter Britain for nearly all of this week.

The Met Office Chief Forecaster said: “Showers of hail and snow are expected through Monday morning.

“The showers will be heaviest and most frequent across western and northern Scotland where 2-5 cm of snow is likely to accumulate relatively widely, with some areas, particularly above 150 m, possibly seeing 6-10 cm of snow.”

“The showers will gradually become less frequent and heavy from the south through Monday morning.
