Flood warnings across UK as Storm Emma ice begins to thaw.
The snow may have stopped falling in most places, but the UK is braced to face the next stage of the ‘Beast from the East’, as forecasters predict dangerous floods to sweep in the country as the snows begin to thaw.
Temperatures may still dip below -4 in rural areas overnight but a gradual thaw will continue to take hold for many places on Sunday.
Met Office forecaster Becky Mitchell said: “Through the rest of the afternoon we’ve got spells of rain across the south, perhaps turning to sleet at times, but we really are losing that risk of snow across much of southern England and Wales through Sunday as temperatures return towards normal for a lot of places.”
Forecasts are improving but there still hazards, with a total of 15 flood warnings and 28 flood alerts in force across England, with high tides and easterly winds expected to result in flooding and ‘extreme danger’ on exposed piers and coastlines.
The following list of locations are in danger of being hit by serious flooding:
- North Sea at Roker, Sunderland
- North Sea at Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth
- Plymouth Barbican
- Somerset coast at Porlock Weir
- Somerset coast at Portishead and Portbury Dock, seafront properties and Portbury Dock areas
- South Cornwall Coast At Mounts Bay, seafront properties
- South Cornwall Coast At Truro
- South Cornwall Coast from Gribbin Head to Rame Head
- South Cornwall Coast from Lands End to Lizard Point excluding Mounts Bay
- South Cornwall Coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head excluding Truro City
- South Cornwall Coast from Rame Head to Wembury Bay including tidal estuaries
- South Devon Coast at the Kingsbridge and Avon Estuaries
- South Devon Coast low-lying areas of the Dart Estuary
- Swanage Bay
- Wye Estuary at Brockweir
