Bank holiday passengers hoping to travel around the UK and France are being warned that their weekend could face travel chaos.

Across the UK a planned series of rail improvements are scheduled meaning passengers could see a reduction in service.

The National Rail Enquires released a statement to say: “Bank holidays are a time when less people travel on the railway, and when traditionally a considerable amount of improvement and engineering work is undertaken on Britain’s rail network.

“Network Rail will be carrying out improvement and essential engineering work on parts of the railway network over the two bank holiday weekends in May.”

Passengers hoping to travel with the Eurostar from London may also face cancellations.

But it’s not just rail passengers that are likely to see a change in schedule as Air France staff continue their scheduled walkout over pay disputes today.

As part of the planned engineering works released by The National Rail, there will be no trains at London Cannon Street running through to Lewisham from Saturday 5 to 7 May.

The routes between Shenfield and Southend will not be running across the weekend, and the line between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone will also be closed, as reported by The Independent.

The Great Western line from Paddington to Maidenhead will suffer disruption as “major modernisation work” is carried out.

The work will disrupt the line until 05.00 on Tuesday 8 May. Trains to Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter will change due to electrical work with services diverted via the Chiltern line to Oxford.

On Sunday Paddington Station will be closed with services running from London Marylebone instead.

Air France staff announced a series of walkouts earlier in the year demanding a six per cent pay rise.

As a result of the strike, 15 per cent of flights have been cancelled.

Long-haul will be running at 78 per cent capacity and only 80 per cent of medium-haul flights to and from Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Almost 90 per cent of short-haul flights to and from Paris-Orly and French provinces will be in operation, but passengers are being warned that late minute delays and cancellations may occur.
