Beto O’Rourke, Confederate plaque removed from Texas Capitol.
Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) on Tuesday backed an effort to remove a Confederate plaque from the Texas Capitol.
O’Rourke retweeted Rep. Eric Johnson (D-Texas), who shared a report that state officials are reviewing the process to remove a plaque bearing the “Children of the Confederacy Creed.”
“The [attorney general] has spoken. The Capitol curator can unilaterally remove the plaque,” Johnson tweeted. “No need to politicize this issue or bog down the 86th [Texas Legislature]. Remove it and let’s move on.”
“I’m with Eric on this one,” O’Rourke responded. “Take it down today.”
The Texas State Preservation Board on Monday said that officials are reviewing procedures for removing historical items, following an opinion from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Paxton said last week that the plaque, which has long been opposed by black lawmakers, can be removed.
O’Rourke, who was defeated earlier this month in his bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), has rocketed to national stardom and sparked speculation he may make a bid for the White House in 2020.
On Monday, he told reporters that he was not ruling out a challenge to President Trump, a reversal from his past statements during his campaign.
The Liberal Beto jerk was and is a law breaker and sets bad example to our children as a leader. do not forget he ran from police and lied about it.
