A man has suffered a serious injury after he was attacked by a shark off the coast of Cork.
The man from Belfast sustained a serious injury to his lower arm when he was bitten by a Blue Shark while he was angling about four miles south of Roches Point on Saturday evening.
Crosshaven RNLI were called to the scene at 6pm and launched a rescue lifeboat. Volunteers rushed to the scene where the man was given emergency treatment on the angling boat before being transferred to Cork University Hospital.
It is understood the man, who is yet unnamed, sustained a serious injury to his lower arm in the attack.
The RNLI said in a statement that it wishes the man well.
Of the 71 different species of shark occurring in Irish waters, Blue sharks are the most common, but attacks are incredibly rare.
