Fanta fans, brace yourselves: one of your favourite summer drinks has been discontinued.

The sour hoo-ha began when a Fanta fan tweeted the brand to ask if they had discontinued its lemon flavour.

Fanta replied in a tweet, which has since been deleted: “Sadly, yes, Fanta lemon was discontinued. But, you can check out our 12 flavors at Fanta.com to see what’s available near you.”

The drinks manufacturer went to explain its reasons for canning the lemon can, tweeting: “Many factors go into the decision to stop selling a particular product.

“Typically, it is a matter of consumer demand. If there isn’t enough consumer interest in a particular product, retailers will stop carrying it.”

Distraught Fanta devotees piled onto social media to lament the flavour’s demise.

One person tweeted: “Finding out that Fanta lemon is being discontinued has ruined my day.”

Another wrote: “Megan stole Wes, Jack’s ex is going into the villa and Fanta Lemon has been discontinued. What a terrible 24 hours Britain is having”.

Has Fanta Lemon been discontinued in the UK?

In a sharp turnaround, Fanta has disclosed its original tweet was a massive mistake and Fanta Lemon is not facing the axe after all.

After one fan tweeted her anger, the company’s official twitter account replied: “While Fanta Lemon is still not available in the US, it has not been discontinued elsewhere! We apologize for any confusion.”

Fanta has not been sold in the US before so it is still a little unclear how the decision came about.

But that didn’t stop happy fanta aficionandos expressing their relief at the news.

Although one cheeky Twitter user posted a picture a shopping trolleys full of the drink with the accompanying tweet: “It may have been confirmed by @fanta that they are not stopping selling Fanta lemon but I’m taking no chances.”
