Norfolk homes have been evacuated over fears they are at risk of coastal erosion, police said.

The residents of seaside homes in Hemsby, Norfolk, have been forced to leave as the area is braced for snow and ice overnight.

The county is covered by a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office, which has warned: “Southern and eastern regions look most vulnerable overnight and early on Sunday.”

Norfolk Police said: “A total of 10 homes at risk from coastal erosion evacuated in Hemsby today in multi-agency response.

“Thanks to local businesses who offered help & support to those affected.

“The Marrams has been closed for the safety of the public and officers will remain on scene overnight.”

The village has been vulnerable to coastal erosion before.

In December 2013, devastated residents watched their cliff-top homes disappear into the sea during a tidal surge.

Five bungalows fell into the water as the high tide eroded the cliff below.

Only the patio doors and a rear window of one couple’s home were left standing as the home was torn in two.

Dozens of residents formed a human chain to help salvage the possessions of those affected.
