A 73-year-old Regina doctor has been charged with four counts of sexual assault, after allegedly performing sexual acts on patients.

The alleged sexual assaults date back to 2012. The charges come following accusations of Sylvester Ukabam inappropriately touching a woman back in September.

The Regina Police Service first received an allegation of sexual assault in July of 2017.

One woman accused him of putting his fingers in her vagina during an exam with no medical reason for it. Ukabam is a gastroenterologist, a doctor who deals with the digestive system.

Further investigation led to three other women who had shared similar allegations, involving the same suspect, with another authority.

Sylvester Ukabam was arrested in Regina on Thursday, Nov. 22 and will appear in provincial court at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2018.

On its website, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan states: “Dr. Ukabam was charged with unprofessional conduct including allegations of sexual boundary breaches.

“The matters were resolved when Dr. Ukabam agreed to relinquish his licence and never to practise medicine anywhere in the world in the future.

“Until his resignation is effective on Dec. 9, 2018, Dr. Ukabam will have a practice monitor present when with female patients and will have a sign posted advising of that requirement.

“He will not perform physical examinations on female patients and will not undertake any procedures which require physical contact with female patients.”
