A man suspected of firing shots at a Walmart has been taken into custody after a police chase in Miramichi, N.B.

The incident happened Wednesday evening at the store on 200 Douglastown Blvd.

The Miramichi Police Force issued a statement Thursday morning confirming a firearm had been discharged prior to their arrival. They say a male suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Officers began pursuing the vehicle, which was heading south on Route #11. Police were able to stop the vehicle about 70 kilometres away, with the help of RCMP.

“The vehicle occupants were taken into custody,” said police in the release.

“There is no current risk to the public. No one was injured at Walmart as a result of the firearm being discharged.”

In a statement, Walmart Corporate Affairs confirmed that shots were fired and the store was placed under lockdown.

“Thankfully, no customers or associates were injured,” the statement reads. “The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority.”
