Virginia Naval air station shooting: Gunman Dead, 1 Woman Injured

One U.S. Navy sailor died and another was injured after a shooting at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach Friday morning, authorities said.

The gunman, a male sailor, was shot and killed by Navy Air Station security personnel following a domestic shooting at the air station, a Navy spokesperson said. The woman who was injured, also a sailor, was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital with multiple non-life threatening gunshot wounds, according to a statement from the Navy.

Both sailors, who were not immediately identified, were assigned to the VFA-37 squadron, NAS Oceana commanding officer Capt. Chad Vincelette said in a Facebook post.

Vincelette said the shooting took place at 6:45 a.m. The incident is currently under investigation. The naval base has a no weapons policy, according to Vincelette.

“We do random and periodic inspections for prohibited items,” he said. “How the Sailor was able to get a weapon on base is part of the investigation.”

A spokesperson for NAS Oceana tells TIME the shooting was an isolated incident and “domestic in nature.”

“The threat has been lifted,” he said.

NAS Oceana went into lockdown Friday morning after reports of an active shooter. The lockdown was lifted at 7:40 a.m.
