Clemson athletics announced Friday that thus far in the month of June, 28 individuals have tested positive for Coronavirus.

Clemson University updated its most recent COVID-19 testing results Friday and revealed there are now 28 positive results from the 315 completed tests for both student-athletes and athletic staff members.

That includes an increase of 25 positive cases from initial test results released by the school June 12. A university athletics department spokesman confirmed Friday that of the positives tests there were 23 football players and two football staff members. The school does not release names of anybody who has received a positive result.

Clemson said in a release it “has notified and isolated each of those individuals who tested positive for a period of at least 10 days. Close known contacts have also been asked to self-quarantine for at least 14 days. Most of the total cases have been asymptomatic and none have required hospitalization. As community transmission continues throughout the area, it is advised that individuals monitor for symptoms.”

What Clemson termed Phase-1 of its return-to-campus activity began June 1 with student-athletes and staff members returning to campus June 8th for voluntary activities for the first time since the pandemic began to shut down the campus. The school initially announced March 12th it was going to on-line classes only.

Clemson first released its earliest COVID-19 testing results June 12th with three student-athletes (two football players and one men’s basketball player) testing positive from 128 total tests performed (104 football players and 12 each from men’s and women’s basketball). In addition there was 41 staff members working directly with those student-athletes that received tests and all came back negative.

The university’s website contains further information regarding what an individual should do if they test positive or knowingly become exposed. Detailed instructions on notification procedures will continue to be updated on that site.

The release added as South Carolina and the Upstate continue to experience community transmission of COVID-19, individuals are advised to continue to practice non-pharmaceutical interventions, including such measures as social distancing and facemasks.
