Boy, 14, who died in hospital after being hit by a grey convertible BMW on motorway during afternoon rush hour.
Police were trying to establish if the youngster was attempting to cross the motorway on foot, the Manchester Evening News reported.
The investigation into the tragedy has established that the boy was hit by a grey convertible BMW.
Officers have spoken to the driver of the vehicle. No arrests have been made.
It happened at around 5.35pm on the M67 near Denton, Greater Manchester.
The motorway was closed for several hours while officers carried out forensic and reconstruction work.
Sgt Lee Westhead, from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Unit, appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward.
He said: “My thoughts are with the victim’s family who are being looked after by specially trained officers at this difficult time.
“While we work to uncover how this happened and piece together the moments before the collision, I’m asking for the public to help in any way they can.
“If you were in the area that evening and saw a pedestrian on the motorway, or have dash-cam images, please get in touch and share this information.”
