DENNIS Edwards, the lead singer of legendary Motown band The Temptations, has died aged 74.

It has been confirmed that the singing icon died in Chicago on Friday (February 2) during recovery from a recent aneurysm, just a day before his 75th birthday.

The group’s agent Denis Vaughan confirmed the news, telling the Press Association: “The ex-member and legend of The Temptations will be sadly missed.

“He was an amazing performer and singer and the whole Temptations family are grieving at his sad passing.

“May Dennis Edwards rest in peace.”

Edwards joined the band in 1968, replacing David Ruffin, and was in and out of the lineup until 1989. In that same year, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He was with The Temptations for some of the group’s most memorable hits including I Can’t Get Next To You, Just My Imagination and Papa Was a Rolling Stone.

Edwards also had a solo career, earning a hit in 1984 with Don’t Look Any Further, which was a duet with Siedah Garrett.

Edwards was born in Fairfield, Alabama in February 1943. His father was a minister and he grew up singing in church.

He is survived by daughter Issa from his marriage to Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters.
