Coronation Street fans have praised the soap for dedicating tonight’s episodes to the legendary Liz Dawn.
The soap icon, who played Vera Duckworth for 34 years, passed away peacefully at home on Monday surrounded by her family.
One fan said: “Touching that tonight’s @itvcorrie is dedicated to the late Liz Dawn #Corrie #VeraDuckworth”
Another tweeted: “#Corrie… dedicated to Liz Dawn. :(“
And another told Corrie: “It was lovely of you to dedicate tonight’s episodes to the legendary and wonderful Liz Dawn.”
Her husband Don Ibbotson and her family said they were “bereft” at losing their “inspiration”.
Their statement read: “We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn.
“Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her.
“She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.”
Liz played fearsome Vera, the wife of Jack, until 2008.
Her former colleagues at Coronation Street said they were “heartbroken” by the news and hailed her as a “true Coronation Street legend.”
Jennie McAlpine who plays Fiz Brown said: “I was a Coronation Street fan as a little girl but I was a fan of Coronation Street because I was a fan of Vera Duckworth and Jack,” said Jennie.
“To get on to that street and to be working with that woman was incredible and the pair of them together were dynamite.”
